Getting Around By Cycling
Most urban dwellers like myself have numerous options for how to get around. A lot of them have their own vehicle, such as a car or truck, motorbike, or scooter. A lot of people also use public transit such the subway system or the bus. All of these are good ways to get around, but cycling offers a lot of positive benefits that the others don't, so I think that cycling is the best.
One benefit of cycling is that you can get exercise. It is of the utmost importance to your longterm health to exercise several times a week, but the majority of people make excuses for why they don't exercise. Lots of people buy gym memberships and never use them. Others will play sports but fail to schedule times with the other players. Lots of people jog but end up taking a day off. Then the next day they take another day off. Then the next day they take a third day off. The problem these people face is that they really do plan to exercise, but since it's not part of their routine they fail to go through with it. Commuting to work by bicycle is the perfect way to incorporate exercise into your daily routine. Because there is no way you can back out of your routine. Even though you may be tired after your work day, there is no way you can back out of your exercise because you need to do it to get home. There's no way to get out of it.
Another reason to cycle around town is that it's affordable. It's unnecessary to buy gas, and in today's world of unstable oil prices that's important. In most cases you don't have to shell out for parking either This depends on the city, but in many cities you can just lock up your bike on the street or a bike rack for free. The main thing to keep it affordable is to make sure your bike doesn't get stolen, so I hope you will invest in a good bike lock.
One more benefit of cycling is that it's flexible. If you decide to ride along the beach instead of the street, hey you can do it. If you decide to take a shortcut down a narrow lane, you are free to do so. You can walk alongside your bicycle on the sidewalk. With a car those things are impossible, as they are with public transport. Sometimes that variety and flexibility of taking whatever route you want can take some of the stress out of your daily commute.
I own a car because I like to take roadtrips and head up into the mountains. But in the city, my bicycle is by far my favorite mode of transportation. So if you do not own a bicycle yet, then I highly recommend you get one and start to get some enjoyment out of your travelling time.
